Promoting Safe Sex and STI Prevention: JOVD Distributes a Thousand Condoms at KEI Week Information Market

The JOVD will hand out a thousand condoms on Monday at the information market of the KEI week. The reason is the high numbers of cases with the STI gonorrhea that are diagnosed in young people.

Chlamydia is still the most common STI in the Netherlands, but RIVM calls the increase in the number of gonorrhea diagnoses particularly worrying. In the first half of 2023, the GGD diagnosed 6,655 gonorrhea diagnoses. In the whole of 2022, there were 10,600. Figures from general practitioners and private providers of STI tests are not included, so the actual number is probably higher. “You can easily prevent this sexually transmitted disease by using a condom,” says chairman Thomas Pauwels of the JOVD. “However, we see that young students are massively ignoring the condom because it is not considered ‘hip’. That is a bad development.”

Pauwels also calls it bizarre: “It is absurd that students do not want to use a condom because it would not be cool.” The chairman refers to statements by general practitioners who report that the use has gone out of fashion due to laziness. “To help new students get through their first KEI week, we hand out a thousand condoms at the information market. The condoms not only send the message to new students that safe sex is sensible and important, but also give a nod to the upcoming elections. The condoms are printed with the playful text: ‘The elections are coming sooner’.”
