Promoting Reading: Exciting Projects and Noteworthy Collections in our Region

Not only literary production flourishes in our region. Interesting projects to promote reading have also begun to stand out, such as those undertaken by Nectandra Ediciones, Editorial Trotamundos, Editorial Infolectura, etc.

Editorial Infolectura, for example, not only publishes and disseminates meritorious works by “regional writers”; It also promotes plausible projects aimed at specific reading audiences. Such is the case of some anthologies for children, as well as appropriate collections designed for adolescents and young people “up to one hundred years old.”

One of the projects that deserves our particular attention and approval is the REGIONAL READING PLAN, a modest but precious collection that brings together the most select stories from a notable sample of liberteño writers.

Images saved, by Julio Garrido Malaver

This book is made up of twenty-five short stories, loaded with subtle criticism and life lessons. Each story is an allegory, an invitation to reflection. Don Julio Garrido constructs extraordinary events from the apparent everydayness of life. As the writer Bethoven Medina rightly states, reading these stories connects us with the teacher’s advisory word, since the characters (men and trees, mainly) “share survival activities” and transmit to us feelings and values that invite us to be “more sensitive in this life.”

The Tales of the Paisita, by Berlin Hilario Blas

This is a delightful book that exudes humor in each of its stories. Reading, for example, “Aprobao, aprobao”, “Las cachangas de don Guille”, “My mother-in-law, the widow”, “El chancho gordo”, “Serafín y la gringa” and all the other stories is a rewarding experience. Anecdotal and curious facts give rise to each story. But, behind these curiosities, there is the daily life of men and women of our mountain range, with their futures, their imaginaries and their language! And precisely, like the icing on the cake, the book closes with a useful glossary of popular expressions. Honestly, a delight!

Journey around the future and other stories, by César Vallejo

Our universal poet is widely known for his transcendental poetic work, but very little for the other genres he has cultivated. This volume collects five examples of his admirable narrative: “The Two Soras”, “The Victor”, “Paco Yunque”, “Journey around the Future” and “Liberation”. In these stories, in addition to the social denunciation, the purity of their characters stands out (in their journey, in school fights, in forced marriage, in the inhuman delay of justice). But the most notable thing, from my point of view, is the mastery with which they are written: the sentence construction, the use of punctuation marks, the management of dialogue, the verbal register… Truly admirable!

The Turkey Hunter, by Robert Jara

This is a book full of reminiscences, popular history and a lot of human sensitivity. Robert Jara rescues – with fine humor – childhood experiences, family anecdotes and encounters with endearing characters. Economic limitations do not diminish goodness; These constitute, rather, opportunities to live unforgettable experiences. Robert, through his stories, reveals to us the ingenuity of his characters to criticize the failure to fulfill electoral promises, the injustice or the apathy of the authorities. It seems to tell us that popular ingenuity and human sensitivity are the best ways to overcome poverty. But he also teaches us about the importance of valuing those who mark the history of our people.

Impossible love, by Teodoro Alzamora

This book begins with the story “Impossible love”, a love story of a bandit with the daughter of a landowner. Added to this story is “Malavida”, a story that will surely water the reader’s eyes and confront them with the dilemma of making a tough decision. The book continues with “The Tigress,” a “captivating story of adolescent love” and ends with “Labia, Señor Judge,” a “jocular dialogue between a judge and a curious character.” As noted on the back cover of the book, “the reader will enjoy the masterful and immersive narrative” of its author. And the free and casual style of Don Teodoro, as well as the fluidity of the narration and the dialogues, end up seducing any reader.

Superman comes flying, by Eduardo González Viaña

There is no loss in reading Don Eduardo, because he “never gives up his good habit of telling us real stories as if they were wonderful tales.” Painful problems such as migration or open attitudes in defense of the book become, through these stories, opportunities for shock and reflection. Painful situations such as the loss of a mother or the memory of dear friends become fantastic stories, thanks to Don Eduardo’s inventive and recreational capacity.

As I said at the beginning, this modest collection deserves our particular attention and approval. It consists of six volumes that are worth reading. The literary and educational value of his stories warrant it.
