Promoting Men’s Reproductive Health: The Potential of Natural Herbal Compounds

IPOL.ID – The Indonesian Faculty of Medicine (FKUI) confirmed Yurnadi as Professor in the Field of Medical Biology. He was inaugurated after delivering a scientific oration entitled “The Potential of Natural Herbal Compounds to Improve Men’s Reproductive Health in the Context of Creating Healthy Indonesian Human Resources”.

In his speech at FK UI on Saturday (14/10/2203), Yurnadi said that the prevalence of infertility in the world has increased in recent years. In 60-70 million married couples (couples), as much as 40-70 percent of infertility is caused by the man.

One of the main factors is hormonal disorders due to disturbances in the pituitary-hypothalamic-testicular axis in regulating gonadotropin hormone levels. This condition affects sperm formation so that sperm production and testosterone hormone levels decrease. As a result, a fertility disorder called hypogonadism arises.

To treat infertility problems such as hypogonadism, there are natural flora and fauna ingredients that have the potential to be used as medicine. Natural ingredients have chemical diversity that is superior to synthetic ingredients because they contain secondary metabolites that provide pharmacological, therapeutic, antioxidant and antibacterial effects. The natural ingredients that are useful for overcoming fertility problems in the male reproductive system are Javanese chilies and seahorses.

Javanese chili plants (Piper retrofractum Vahl) are widely used for treatment. The fruit of this plant has been used to treat flatulence and heartburn, stimulate appetite, and overcome impotence. The ingredients contained in this fruit have a stimulant effect on nerve cells so that they can increase the body’s stamina. The chemical compounds contained in Javanese chilies are alkaloids, β-sitosterol, terpenoids, saponins, resins (kavicin) and so on which can improve blood circulation.

“Experimental research was carried out on mice induced with Depo Medroxy Progesterone Acetate (DMPA). The mice were given Javanese chili extract. As a result, Javanese chili extract can reduce sperm concentration and increase testosterone hormone levels, without affecting the hematological profile, blood chemistry and body weight of mice even though the experiment was carried out for 18 weeks. “From these results, it was found that Javanese chilies can increase testosterone levels, are androgenic, and are safe against prostate specific antigen (PSA),” said Yurnadi as reported ui.ac.id.

Meanwhile, for natural ingredients for fauna, the seahorse Hippocampus comes L. has also been widely used as a traditional tonic by the community. The seahorse Hippocampus comes L. has the highest yield value. Apart from that, this type of seahorse has proximate powder content with high water and ash content. Hippocampus comes L. also contains alkaloid and triterpenoid active compounds; contains the amino acids Arginine, Glycine, Lysine, Alanine, and Proline; and contains steroid glycosides with molecular weights 240, 619, 717, and 755.

To see the effect of Hippocampus comes L. seahorse extract on increasing fertility, Prof. Yurnadi again used mice as an experimental medium. It turns out that seahorse extract inserted into the bodies of mice can increase sperm concentration and quality (motility and viability), as well as increase levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone. In addition, this material is able to increase the population and meiotic index of sex cells and reduce sex cell apoptosis, without affecting the hematological profile, blood chemistry and body weight of mice. In in vitro research, administering Hippocampus comes L. seahorse extract in various doses can also increase sperm motility and viability.

Before conducting a study on the benefits of natural herbal compounds on men’s reproductive health, Prof. Yurnadi has conducted a lot of similar research. Some of them are Improvement of Spermatozoa Concentration due to Maximal Exercise with Vitis gracilis Wall (2023); Comparison of Testosterone Undecanoate (TU) and Testosterone Enanthate (TE) with a Combination of Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) on Spermatogenic Cells in Men (2022); and Characterization of Seahorese (Hippocampus comes L.) Extracts Originating from Culture and Nature in Pesawaran, Lampung, Indonesia (2022).

Prof. Dr. Drs. Yurnadi, M. Kes. completed a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Andalas University in 1991; completed the Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences at FKUI in 1999; and obtained a Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences at FKUI in 2011. He served as Department Secretary and Administrative & Financial Coordinator of the Medical Biology Department, FKUI in 2018–2021, and is currently a teaching staff member at the Department of Medical Biology, FKUI.
