Promoting Male Participation in Family Planning: The Role of Condoms in Pregnancy Prevention

Jakarta

So far, pregnancy planning is still the wife’s responsibility. The use of contraceptives is still dominated by mothers.

Even though men can also take a role in family planning. As a contraceptive, condoms can be used to prevent pregnancy which is safe and proven to be effective so that it can increase community participation in the Family Planning (KB) program.

“Condoms are one method of preventing pregnancy, there are couples or women who cannot use hormonal birth control, so there are alternatives. If the wife can’t (KB), then her husband,” said the Director of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Imran Prambudi on the contraceptive education agenda in South Jakarta, Tuesday (20/2/2024).

Based on data from the Family Information System of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (SIGA BKKBN) in 2022, the number of men participating in vasectomies was only 3.27 percent of the target of 5 percent.

Even though condoms are among the easiest male contraceptives to obtain and use. Apart from that, the price is cheap and has minimal side effects.

In fact, it is very rare for birth control campaigns to emphasize and prioritize the use of condoms for men. The stigma that only women use contraception is still strongly embedded in society.

“With products that provide protection but are quite enjoyable, it will be possible to increase men’s participation in family planning,” he said.
