Promoting Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change: Statement by Mon. John Putzer at the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Human Rights Council

Fr. Jinu Jacob, Vatican City

Mon John Putzer, Charge d’Affaires of the Holy See’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations, made the statement on the occasion of the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Human Rights Council for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change in Geneva.

Mon John Putzer began his message by citing the statement made by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the COP27 conference that “the human face of the climate emergency challenges us profoundly.” Then the indirect crisis created by climate change in forced migrations was also mentioned.

The monsignor added that Pope Francis strongly condemned the unequal practices that turn a blind eye to migrants trying to escape the growing poverty caused by the environment. He also did not hide the fact that short-sighted practices influenced by economic concerns lead to social evils such as exploitation, abuse and discrimination.

Therefore, developing countries should be considered, and the international community should be ready to ensure justice for the poor people who are destined to suffer the consequences of climate change, Mr. John Putzer underlined.
