In the opinion of the ÖDP, climate change and the extinction of species no longer allow a simple “business as usual”. The easy route will inevitably lead to massive damage to the forests on the Lower Rhine.
A new forest policy must have the goal of preserving the forest form of vegetation. The preservation of biodiversity, i.e. the preservation of the local flora and fauna, is of existential importance for the continued life and survival of the people on the Lower Rhine. To this end, the diverse functions of the forest must be protected and preserved.
According to the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP), forests are more than just wood plantations. Forests must come as close as possible to the original “forest community” of plants and animals.
According to the ÖDP on the Lower Rhine, these goals of forest management should be pursued with vigor:
Securing the local and regional climate protection function Groundwater and water protection Protecting the forest floor Protecting forest biotopes Securing the “infrastructural services” of the forest such as pollution, noise and visibility protection Securing the recreational function of the forest for people Developing the forest as a learning and experience space Using the Healing effects of the forest
The ÖDP on the Lower Rhine will push for change in the sense of an ecological forest policy – especially through its local elected officials – and take initiatives to implement it.
