Rasdorf (oz/as) – The Hesse Green Belt not only has an ecological function that is worth protecting, its cultural and historical significance is also an important part of its protected status as a national natural monument. For this purpose, the state of Hesse has awarded funding totaling 158,000 euros to projects that promote the culture of remembrance in the region and make the history of the German-German division tangible.
Among those included is the Point Alpha Foundation, which would like to use a digital exhibition to shed light on the role of the Federal Border Guard during the Cold War. The funding of around 65,000 euros enables a closer look at the Federal Border Guard between 1951 and 1989, which until now had only played a little-noticed role, but was actually very important.
Markus Hofmann, member of the state parliament from Alliance 90/The Greens from the Fulda district, greatly appreciates the cultural and historical work of the Point Alpha Foundation and is pleased about the opportunity to experience a new project related to the Green Belt in the district: “On the one hand, there is preservation German history and communicating historical facts to the younger generation are very important. On the other hand, the Green Belt protects a unique biotope network that was able to develop during the years of German division. Both are expressed in the protected status as a national natural monument, for which we Greens in Hesse have worked very hard.”
