The judge at the highest US court was celebrated like a pop star by her fans. Ginsburg was considered a pioneer for women’s rights and liberal ways of thinking. Now a statue commemorates them.

Around six months after Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, the first statue honors the prominent judge in her hometown of New York.

The roughly life-size bronze statue was unveiled on Friday (local time) in a shopping center in the Brooklyn district – and subsequently photographed by many visitors. The work of the artist couple “Gillie and Marc” was created in collaboration with the “Statues for Equality” initiative, which campaigns for more statues of women in New York.

A few months ago, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced another statue for the judge, who is often abbreviated as “RBG”. However, it was not yet clear where and from when this would be seen.

Ginsburg died in September at the age of 87 from complications from cancer. The longtime liberal judge at the US Supreme Court was born in Brooklyn in 1933 and is admired by many people, especially in her hometown.
