Security guards and journalists were encouraged to leave the courtroom when the horrific charges against the British zoologist Adam Britton (51) were to be read out, writes Sky News.
Britton, a prominent crocodile expert and academic, has pleaded guilty to a total of 56 counts of rape, torture and killing of dogs.
From 2014 until his arrest in April 2022, Britton is said to have abused more than 42 dogs.
39 of them are said to have lost their lives, writes the news website.
According to BBC Britton filmed himself while carrying out the torture and rapes. At the same time, the broadcaster states that Britton has previously participated in BBC and National Geographic productions.
Confiscated sex toys
At the zoologist’s home, police seized 44 items, which include cameras, a computer, external hard drives, tools, weapons, dog equipment and sex toys.
On Monday, the trial began in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in the city of Darwin, Australia, where Britton has lived for the past 20 years to research crocodiles.
The cruel case is now causing attention worldwide, and is widely discussed in the British, American and Australian press.
In addition to pleading guilty to the 56 above-mentioned counts of animal cruelty, Britton is said to have also pleaded guilty to four counts of both transferring and accessing child abuse material.
In court, it was stated that Britton has a “sadistic sexual interest in animals, especially dogs”.
– Grotesque and perverted
The dogs the Brit is said to have attacked – in addition to his own – were pets he had adopted from families in the Darwin region, who for various reasons could no longer take care of their four-legged friends.
– This case contains facts that can only be described as grotesque and perverse acts. It’s so confronting and shocking that I think it has the potential to cause a nervous breakdown, Supreme Court Justice Michael Grant said during the trial.
Prosecutor Marty Aust said several dog owners had given their pets away with heavy hearts.
Little did they know what Britton had planned to do with them.
– He often built a relationship with dog owners and got them to adopt their animals. Many reluctantly gave their pets away because of travel or work commitments, Aust said, and claims Britton used manipulation as a tool.
If the owners asked for updates after the adoption, Britton is said to have lied and made up stories.
“I can’t stop”
In reality, he tortured and raped the dogs in a container on the property. This was equipped with recording equipment, writes the BBC.
In court, the container was referred to as a “torture room”. Britton is said to have shared the material he filmed on various online forums under a false name.
According to Sky News, the zoologist is said to have written this on an online forum:
“I had managed to suppress it. But in recent years it has returned, and now I can’t stop. I don’t want to stop.”
One of the clips Britton shared under a pseudonym was forwarded to the police. That’s how they got him arrested in 2022.
Adam Britton, who also worked as a senior researcher at Charles Darwin University, has also participated in Sir David Attenborough’s documentary series.
He remains behind bars until sentencing on December 13.
