The British Bishop of Oxford, Steven Croft, believes the Church of England should allow same-sex marriage. In a 50-page essay, he apologizes for the church’s attitude towards the LGBTQ + community, which Croft says was “inflicted through years of” pain and suffering. ”
As Bishop of Oxford, Croft is the most prominent member of the Anglican Church so strongly in favor of same-sex marriage. In his essay about him, he admits that his views of him have “slowly changed,” writes the British newspaper The Guardian.
Croft advocates “love and respect” for LGBTQ + people and their families, both inside and outside the church. “Love and respect for all those who think differently”, added the bishop.
Not only does Croft want same-sex marriage to be allowed within the church. Priests should also be able to marry someone of their own sex, according to the bishop.
The Church of England does not allow its priests to enter into same-sex marriages. It would go against the Church’s teaching that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. Same-sex marriage has been legal in England since 2013.
