ProMendoza celebrated Malbec Day together with San Rafael wineries that want to go international: Government of Mendoza Press

The president of the ProMendoza Unit, Patricia Giménez, toured part of the productive area of the department of San Rafael this Tuesday and shared with producers, winemakers and wine exporters a work agenda in which World Malbec Day was commemorated.

“Malbec is the emblematic variety that we have chosen to promote our products abroad. It opens doors for us in the world, so that all the wines from all our wineries have an international business opportunity. For this reason, on the eve of the celebrations, we have toasted in the south of the province because, like Malbec, we want to be the ones who help open the doors of foreign trade to all SMEs in Mendoza, federalizing the services of ProMendoza,” said Giménez. .

And he added: “From January until now, I have visited all the productive oases to personally learn about the needs of each area and create joint agendas with the most representative organizations.” He stressed that it is important that information about events and fairs reaches producers and companies in the South and that the doors of the ProMendoza office are open to those who want to reach international trade.

ProMendoza’s headquarters in San Rafael is located at Pellegrini 120, 2nd floor. In General Alvear there is another office that works in the municipal building.

In Rama Caída, part of ProMendoza’s Southern team visited Bodega Ibarra, which has begun its export path with this organization, within the Southern associative cluster of Mendoza Wine Group, which makes up a wide exportable offer. With them they will send samples of artisanal and organic wines to a potential client in Panama. That contact was generated during Giménez’s participation in the Expocomer event last March.

Additionally, for this year, this group of entrepreneurs plans to participate in ExpoVino Paraguay, the most important event organized by the Chamber of Suppliers of that country. They will also travel to Brazil to Wine South America by Bento GonçalvesBrazilian capital of grapes and wine.

The ProMendoza team also visited Bodegas Vides SA, one of the oldest and an emblem of wine in San Rafael. They are interested in exporting their sparkling wines and expanding to other markets. They were invited to participate in an important meeting that will take place in June in the United Kingdom. There was also talk about the Apas fair in Brazil.

Work agenda in San Rafael

In addition to wineries, ProMendoza’s work agenda in the southern province included two important meetings. The first was with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of that department, chaired by Hugo Tornaghi. There, the ProMendoza team presented the new agile format of traditional business internationalization programs. The main work points of the joint agenda for the South of Mendoza for this year were also discussed.

The second was with representatives of the Chamber of Foreign Trade and the Chamber of Plum Exporters. There, the possibility of incorporating new markets for one of the main products exported from the South of Mendoza was analyzed. Giménez commented that both Paraguay and Bolivia have become excellent local markets for the province’s fresh and processed products, because the low logistics costs give them greater competitiveness.

The importance of malbec

World Malbec Day is celebrated on April 17 in honor of the fact that on that same day, but in 1853, the project that contemplated the creation of a Quinta Normal and an Agricultural School was presented to the Mendoza Legislature. Thus, the Quinta Agronómica began to operate, where the first agronomists and winegrowers with specific training graduated.

Michel Pouget was its director and is considered – by Silvina Carbonari, wine historian – the pioneer of modern Argentine viticulture.

Mendoza exports more than 90% of Argentina’s varietal wines, which represents 660 million dollars in 185 million liters in 2023, according to data from the Argentine Wine Observatory.

Of the malbec wines exported from Argentina, Mendoza sells 94% FOB and 92% in liters. That is, in 2023 Argentina exceeded 445 million dollars, with almost 128 million liters of wine of this variety in the world.

80% of the Malbec that Mendoza sends to the world is bottled wine. The rest is exported in bulk to be divided into different destinations.

The province’s flagship variety represents around 64% of the total varieties exported from Mendoza, both in FOB and in liters. Following in order of importance are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon, Torrontés Riojano, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Bonarda.

92% export Malbec, from 239 Mendoza wineries that market the wines around the world.

Of the 142 destinations to which Mendoza takes all its products, 123 markets buy our Malbec, 87% of the total. The countries that enjoy our Malbec the most are the United States, with 33%; United Kingdom, 23%; Brazil, 11%; Canada, 5%, and Mexico, 4%.
