Prolonged stress can make people sick

Prolonged stress also has an impact on the physique so that the sufferer gets sick easily

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – National Central General Hospital (RSUPN) Psychiatrist Cipto Mangunkusumo, Gina Anindyajati, said that prolonged stress doesn’t just have a negative impact on mental health. Prolonged stress also has an impact on the physique so that the sufferer gets sick easily.

“People suffering from prolonged stress will get sick more easily, including physical pain,” Gina said in commemoration of World Mental Health Day which was held online by Ciracas Health Center in East Jakarta, followed by Jakarta, Friday (28 / 10/2022).

When a person experiences stress, their body will produce excessive stress hormones that cause inflammation in the body’s cells. Stress hormones will also cause you to experience chronic fatigue so that your metabolism and stamina will also decrease.

According to Gina, one of the fatal conditions that people with prolonged stress can experience is blockage or rupture of blood vessels that puts them at risk of stroke. “When the stress hormones are released, these hormones will work in certain parts of the body, one of which is the blood vessels. When the stress hormones act in the blood vessels, they cause inflammation in the blood vessels, increasing the susceptibility to plaque formation.” . Gina explained.

“When this fat or plaque builds up in the blood vessels, it will cause blockages. When the blood vessels are blocked, a stroke can occur. This is why stressed people may be more susceptible to physical pain,” he explained.

According to Gina, stress really became a big problem during the Covid-19 pandemic. She said the Association of Psychiatric Specialists (PDSKJI) collected mental health data through a self-examination questionnaire.

In the past two years, as many as 14,988 people have accessed the automatic checks on the official PDSKJI website. As many as 75.8 percent of them are women. From the self-exam results, 75 percent indicated they have psychological problems ranging from anxiety problems, depression, to the desire to harm themselves or even commit suicide.
