Prolonged detention for the mother of the 2-year-old child who died of dehydration in Mechelen

The Mechelen council chamber extended by one month the detention of Cindy, the 22-year-old mother whose young child died last Tuesday in Mechelen.

The 2-year-old probably died of malnutrition, possibly in combination with dehydration. An investigation is opened for manslaughter and deprivation of food and care for a minor resulting in death.

The little boy lost his life last Tuesday in an overheated apartment in Mechelen. After trying to resuscitate him in vain, the emergency services found that the child was particularly thin and small for his age and alerted the justice system.

The mother denies any mistreatment. She was the one who called for help after discovering her unconscious son.
