Project Warsaw – Jastrzębski Coal. Great playing at Torwar! PlusLiga

Volleyball players from Jastrzębie started the match at Torwar as an undefeated team in PlusLiga since February 24 this year, when they lost 1: 3 to Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie on their own court. Since then, they have won nine consecutive matches, including two each with Grupa Azoty ZAKS-ą Kędzierzyn-Koźle and Projekt, which was then still acting as VERVA Warszawa Orlen Paliwa. This series, however, ended, although the guests had match balls in the Torwar hall.

– We have great potential, but we have not fully shown it yet – said the center of Jastrzębski Węgiel, Jurij Gladyr, before the match in Warsaw. The first set was dominated by guests, and in the second Andrea Gardini’s players were already leading 15:11 and it seemed that they were not in danger. Then, however, they made two mistakes and the hosts sprang up and they started to play much better. At 20:18 for the Project, a banal error, ineptly breaking the ball to the other side of the net, was also committed by Stephane Boyer, attacking the guests, and the whole game ended with a phenomenal Project action – first Bartosz Kwolek saved the ball, and a moment later Serb Dušan Petković finished the action perfectly.

It was these two players who were to lead the Project to a win. Kwolek, who was missing from the Polish national team in important tournaments this year, was the team leader in the first two rounds of PlusLiga. – I reset my head after all this and now I’m playing well – said the host before the match with Jastrzębie. In the match with the Polish champion, Petković, acquired before the season from PGE Skra Bełchatów, played from the very beginning. In the second round, he did not play against Cuprum Lubin (3: 1) due to personal problems. They both had some good passages, incl. at the beginning of the third set, but in this game the guests were ultimately the winner.

In the fourth set, full of twists and referees’ controversies, the volleyball players from Jastrzębie defended seven set balls, but finally, in a dramatic ending, they had to recognize the superiority of the Project players. There was a tie-break, the fourth in the sixth consecutive game of both teams. In the end, the Varsovians enjoyed the victory – of course, after playing on the advantage and great emotions. The 26 points scored by the attacking Stephen Boyer did nothing to the champion of Poland. The French played a bit worse in the most important moments and it was he who was blocked in the last action of this great match.
