Project Manager Ilka Maag Leading Innovation in Vocational Training Campus Development

“Any educational qualification requires effort and commitment, whether it is academic or professional. We should treat both branches equally and pave the way for lifelong learning for people,” says Maag, who initially completed dual training herself and later completed a part-time master’s degree in organizational management. The 42-year-old worked professionally at various administrative levels in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the Düsseldorf district government, the city of Essen and the state ministry for labor, social affairs and integration.

“The CBB includes cross-sectional tasks that I have already encountered in my educational biography. The discourse on the dual training system was of course also held in the training consensus office. I would like to use the knowledge gained from this to strengthen vocational training in the county.” In addition, Maag gained experience with various urban development funding measures, which will now benefit her in the organizational support of the upcoming construction processes. The plan is to build a new innovation center and a learning center. While the implementation plan for the innovation center is expected to be presented in autumn 2024, the groundbreaking for the learning center is scheduled to take place this year.

Since November 2023, Ilka Maag has been responsible for project management for the CBB, takes care of the acquisition of funding and looks after the CBB steering group. These include the district’s vocational schools, the IHK and HWK, district craftsmen’s association, business association, Federal Employment Agency and Lebenshilfe. From the project manager’s perspective, this collaboration is exactly what the idea of the vocational training campus is all about: “The CBB is not created through the initiative of one individual, but through the cooperation of many different players. In the end, a common intersection is created from which everyone benefits – both people at the beginning and in the middle of their professional life.” The district’s vocational schools were included from the start. As part of a survey, the students were able to state what was important to them when setting up a vocational training campus. Your wishes are reflected in the conception of the CBB.

“The process enjoys broad support from politics and society. We have good partners at our side, which is very valuable for the success of our joint project,” says Ilka Maag. She will soon receive personnel support through two additional management positions, one for the learning center and one for the innovation center. They should be filled by the middle of the year. The steering group will decide on the annual planning for 2024 in January. Ilka Maag has already decided that she will be involved in creating the spatial program for the innovation center. In addition, she would like to expand the network of suitable cooperation partners and raise additional funding.

“My personal wish for the CBB is that the idea becomes a real place for young people. It’s not just about a place that shows the diverse perspectives of vocational training, but also offers orientation, encourages self-organized learning and arouses curiosity about new methods and techniques, for example virtual reality or artificial intelligence. “It should be a place that provides inspiration and motivates lifelong learning – a place that companies and parents also value,” introduces the CBB’s new project manager. The campus idea will be experienced in the long term in very different projects, which will be supported by concrete ideas and offers from the cooperation partners.
