Prohibition of disposable bags in stores in Ukraine – what other restrictions will be introduced and when

What is now prohibited

In Ukraine, on December 10, a law came into force, according to which it is prohibited:

  • free distribution of ultra-thin plastic bags (with walls less than 15 micrometers thick);
  • thin plastic bags (with walls 15 to 50 microns thick);
  • oxo-degradable plastic bags.

There is an exception: biodegradable bags and plastic bags no more than 225x345x450 mm in size, which are used for meat, fish and products from them, as well as bulk products, for which the bag is the primary packaging. They can be used in stores until January 1, 2023.

What other types of packages would be taboo

The official noted that on March 9, 2022, the second stage of restrictions will work – it will relate to the ban on the distribution of such types of bags in retail, catering and services:

  • ultra-thin plastic bags with a wall thickness of less than 15 micrometers (except for primary packaging for meat, fish, bulk);
  • thin plastic bags with walls 15 to 50 micrometers thick;
  • oxo-degradable plastic bags.

What else will be prohibited and when

Sagittarius also announced a ban on ultra-thin plastic bags, which are the primary packaging for fresh fish, meat and products from them, bulk products, ice.

These restrictions will come into effect on January 1, 2023.

The ministry notes that by that time, manufacturers and retail chains should have already introduced alternatives for them.

In addition, the official spoke about plans to limit the use of disposable plastic products:

  • straws,
  • disposable tableware,
  • cotton swabs, etc.

“Because all this is also used for only 20-30 minutes, and it will harm the environment and you and I for hundreds of years,” said Strelets.

He also added that the abandonment of such plastic in Ukraine will also be implemented gradually, so that people “can adapt to changes.”
