Progressive Party Lawmaker Dragged Away during President Yoon Seok-yeol’s Jeonbuk Ceremony

On the 18th, Progressive Party lawmaker Kang Seong-hee was stopped by security guards and dragged away after causing a commotion while President Yoon Seok-yeol entered and shook hands with attendees at the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province inauguration ceremony held at the Moak Hall of the Korea Sori Culture Center in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. / Yonhap News

On the 18th, the President’s Office said of Progressive Party lawmaker Kang Seong-hee (Jeonju-eul, Jeollabuk-do), who was dragged out by security guards at the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province inauguration ceremony attended by President Yoon Seok-yeol, “We were asked to leave because the situation could be judged as an act of harm to security.”

An official from the Presidential Office met with reporters that day and said, “When Rep. Kang shook hands with President Yoon, he screamed and did not let go of the President’s hand. “He even pulled the president’s hand towards himself,” he said of the situation at the time.

He continued, “The security office kept warning us to let go, and even after the president passed, (Rep. Kang) continued to shout and disrupt the event.”

An official from the President’s Office said, “This event was, more than anything else, an event to launch Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, and I think it is beyond the pale for a member of the National Assembly within the system, whose constituency is in Jeonbuk, to do something like this.”

President Yoon attended the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province inauguration ceremony held at the Korea Sound Culture Center in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do on this day and shook hands with key attendees, including lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties. President Yoon smiled and shook hands with Rep. Kang, but Rep. Kang did not let go of President Yoon’s hand, shouting, “We must change the tone of state administration.”

An official from the Presidential Office said, “It was a situation where people continued to shout, and even after being separated (from the President), they continued to make hand horns and shout, so from the Security Service’s perspective, it was natural that there was a risk to the safety of the President and the people attending the event.” “We had no choice but to judge that harm could be done, and it appears that he was ejected accordingly,” he said.

When asked about legal action against Rep. Kang, this official said, “As of now, we are not in that situation.” However, he said, “It is very serious that a member of the National Assembly who entered the system made such a fuss at a place where he was talking about the future and development of Jeonbuk, which includes his constituency, and did things such as screaming and holding the president’s hand and not letting go. “I feel regretful,” he said.

However, the Progressive Party said, “When Rep. Kang told President Yoon, ‘The tone of state administration must be changed,’ the bodyguards covered his mouth and dragged him away with all his limbs.”
