Profile of Rear Admiral Muhammad Ali, new KSAL, former commander of KRI Nanggala

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo will inaugurate a new Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL) to replace Admiral Yudo Margono. The inauguration will be held at the State Palace, Jakarta on Wednesday (28/12/2022).

“Inauguration of KSAL, KSAL Insya Allah tomorrow, KSAL will be inaugurated tomorrow,” Jokowi said as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube broadcast on Tuesday.

TNI commander Admiral Yudo Margono also said that the inauguration of the new KSAL will take place today.

Indeed, Yudo said that TNI Vice Admiral (Laksdya) Muhammad Ali would become his replacement KSAL.

“Yes, there is (name), Vice Admiral Mohamad Ali or Pangkogabwilhan-I. The inauguration is tomorrow at 9:30 at the palace,” Yudo said via text message on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Ali is currently the commander of Joint Regional Defense Command (Pangkobgabwilhan) I.

So who is Muhammad Ali?

As a fresh graduate of the Naval Academy (AAL) in 1989, young Ali grew up on a Navy submarine.

This can be seen from Ali’s resume in the early days of pursuing a career in the marine industry. His first assignment was to become an officer of the Indonesian Naval Operations Department (KRI) Sigalu-857 in 1990.

Two years later, or more precisely in 1992, Ali moved from the fast patrol boat class attack to the submarine KRI Nanggala-402. On this sub, he assumed the position of Assistant Officer of the Ekasen Division.

In 1993, Ali moved from the KRI Nanggala submarine to the KRI Pasopati-410 submarine with the position of Torpedo Officer.

Ali held this position for two years before finally returning to the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine as Communications Division Officer (Padivkom) in 1995 and KRI Nanggala-402 Lexen Department Chief in 1996.

While holding the rank of major, or in the period 1996, Ali was Chief of Sops Tactics for Eastern Fleet Command and Kadalsen Divlat Dep Sewaco Puslattlekdalsen Kodikal from 2000 to 2003.

After serving off the warship for about seven years, Ali returned to the submarine. Absolutely, Ali was immediately commander of KRI Nanggala-402 in 2004-2005.

After two years at the helm of KRI Nanggala-402, Ali then ventured out of the warship to become Pasops Satsel Koarmatim in 2006, Pabandya Renstra Paban I Renstra Srena KSAL from 2006 to 2009.

Much later, while holding the rank of First Admiral, Ali served as Pati Sahli KSAL in Ecojemen Sector in 2015, KSAL Special Staff in 2015, Danguskamlabar from 2015-2017 and Deputy Chief of Staff of KSAL from 2017-2018.

Subsequently, while holding the rank of Rear Admiral, Ali was tasked to become Governor of the Navy in 2018-2019, Koorsahli KSAL in 2019, Commander Fleet I Command in 2019-2020 and Asrena KSAL in 2020-2021.

Subsequently, Ali was promoted to be a three-star officer by serving as Pangkogabwilhan in 2021 till now.
