Profile of John McAfee, King of Antivirus Who Died in Prison

Founder of antivirus software McAfee, John McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison cell hours after a Spanish court granted a request to be extradited to the United States (US).

John McAfee is one of the most famous pioneers in Silicon Valley, and at the same time a pioneer in the invention of the antivirus technology that is now used by many devices. His life was dominated by legal issues and personal exploitation that made headlines.

Some people may be familiar with the name “McAfee”, even before hearing about John McAfee’s profile.



Corporately, McAfee is one of the most widely used antivirus software providers for Windows PCs and is credited as a pioneering cybersecurity company.

Much of the research was developed by John McAfee himself, who propelled the company to fame in 1987 by developing code that protected computers from the Brain virus. Brain virus is called the first computer virus created for the IBM PC.

His company, McAfee Associates was founded in 1987 with the hope of entering the growing field of antivirus technology.

McAfee sold part of his stake in the company in 1994, reportedly for US$100 million or Rp.

McAfee was bought by Intel for US$7.6 billion or Rp.109 trillion in 2010.

When Intel renamed McAfee to Intel Security, McAfee said he was very grateful to Intel for freeing him from that horrible association with the worst software on the planet.

Intel finally re-named Intel Security to McAfee in 2016 citing CNET.
