Retired Russian general Andrey Troshev or known Sedoy (gray hair) became a discussion after the President Vladimir Putin proposing him to be the boss of the Wagner Group mercenaries.

Putin was worried after Wagner’s boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and his troops planned a coup d’etat of the Minister of Defense and failed on June 24. He views this action as a betrayal.

Five days after the planned coup, Putin is said to have held a three-hour meeting with 30 top military officials including Prigozhin in the Kremlin.

During an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, Putin laid out a number of options regarding Wagner’s future, one of which is to continue to fight under male command with the nickname Sedoy which means “gray hair.”

Apart from that, who is Andrey Troshev?

According to sanctions documents released by the European Union (EU), Troshev is a retired Russian colonel, a founding member and executive director of the Wagner Group.

The Wagner frontman previously served as the group’s chief of staff for operations in Syria from December 2021.

“He was primarily involved in the Deir ez-Zor area,” the EU sanctions document was quoted as saying CNNSaturday.

Deir ez-Zor is in eastern Syria, where Wagner soldiers came face to face with the US military during the country’s civil war.

“In doing so, he made an important contribution to (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad’s war effort and thereby supports and benefits from the Syrian regime,” the document continued.

The British sanctions document also names Troshev as the chief executive of a private military group that “has been suppressing the civilian population in Syria”.

Meanwhile, according to Russian media, Sedoy is a veteran of the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan. He has been awarded a number of medals for his services to the country.

He was also invited to a banquet at the Kremlin in December 2016. A photo, believed to be part of the event, shows Troshev with Putin and another Wagner founder, Dmitry Utkin.

Troshev was born in April 1953 in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. Petersburg.
