Professor of Social Sciences Unair regrets the cancellation of BEM

Surabaya, CNN Indonesia

Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) University of AirlanggaOne) Surabaya, Prof. Dr. Hotman Siahaan regrets the suspension of the Student Action Board (GOOD) FISIP Unair.

BEM FISIP Unair was suspended by the dean of the campus, after criticizing the establishment of Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, through flowers with a satirical tone.

“The Dean’s action freezes BEM [adalah] “a symbol of the authoritarianism that is beginning to appear in the new government of this republic,” said Hotman when he was confirmed, Sunday (27/10).

Hotman said the academic world should uphold freedom of expression. However, this ban actually reflects a decline in Unair’s intellectual values.

“It is very sad that activities like this happen on a campus that claims to be an intellectual campus,” he continued.

Hotman emphasized that campuses should prioritize intellectual traditions through communication and scientific discussions, without silencing the critical voices of students.

“Intellectual traditions are arguments to find the truth. Arguments are in the form of dialogue. In dialogue there are claims, that is claims about truth, accuracy, authenticity and morality,” he explained.

However, according to Hotman, the Dean of FISIP Unair has used a power approach, which is no longer scientific or intellectual.

“Dean FISIP did not take such a path. The banning of BEM was a power relationship.

The former Dean of FISIP Unair also believes that practices like this show how the shadow of the New Order is returning in the academic world.

“If it reappears now, don’t blame the students for thinking that this is the “New New Order” system that has emerged,” he concluded. .
