Professor of nose in Kasr El-Ainy: Bad smells are symptoms of Corona … Video

A phenomenon has spread during the recent period of loss of the sense of smell and taste, and there have been many questions about the reason for this, and the relationship of this symptom to the currently spreading Corona epidemic, and Dr. Hatem Badran, professor of otolaryngology at the Faculty of Medicine, Qasr Al-Ainy, said that we are seeing many patients suffering from loss of smell and taste, Adding that the loss of the sense of smell alone or with the loss of the sense of taste is a basic symptom of corona, and currently this is considered the most accurate method for diagnosing the disease in the whole world, explaining that the matter is not limited to losing the sense only, but it is possible to smell an unpleasant smell, or change the smell of substances Known, or change in the taste of food, all of them are basic symptoms of the Corona virus, which directly affects the olfactory nerve.

Dr. Hatem Badran continued, in a special video for “The Seventh Day”, that it is known that sinus infections and nasal allergy do not cause loss of smell or taste, but there are some diseases in the nose that can cause loss or weakness of the sense of smell and not taste, such as Tumors of the brain or nose, or the presence of large adenoids that completely prevent air from reaching the olfactory nerve, and the loss of smell in these cases is gradual, “and not surprising, as happens with Corona patients”, and it is preceded by many other symptoms, so that the loss of smell at that time is the last symptom.

He explained that any nerve in the body must be treated immediately and strongly from the first day, as regeneration occurs in the body’s tissues in the event of any problem, but it is difficult to do so in nerve cells, and therefore time is a critical factor in recovery, and one day differentiates with the patient in the speed of the return of the senses, In the rate of nerve healing, and in the event of loss of the sense of smell and taste, they must be treated very aggressively and quickly, to keep the olfactory nerve from permanent loss.

Badran warned against advising any patient who lost their senses to wait, with the aim of automatically returning the senses, because this deprives the patient of the opportunity for a full and rapid recovery, but rather leads to the development of the degree of infection to a moderate or severe degree, so that he may need to enter into intensive care, and he also warned against obeying unscientific advice. Such as chewing onions, or putting oil or vinegar in the nose, all of them are myths and can destroy nasal tissues forever.
