Professor Anastas Gerdzhikov has accepted to be a presidential candidate.
Prof. Gerdzhikov is the second-term rector of Alma Mater, chairman of the Council of Rectors.
GERB will support Sofia University rector Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov for president in the elections on November 14.
He will be nominated by an initiative committee, sources from the party informed “Horizon”. A little later, Professor Gerdzhikov stated, quoted by BGNES: “I have accepted to be nominated as a presidential candidate.”
His candidacy is expected to be officially nominated and registered for the presidential vote in the CEC within days.
GERB-SDS are ready to support the candidacy of Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov, but the coalition has not yet officially announced whether this will be their final nomination.
The deadline for submitting registration applications is Monday, October 4.
For the upcoming Constituent Assembly of the initiative committee, which will raise the candidacy of the rector of Sofia University as a candidate for president, professors at Alma Mater have confirmed. However, it is not yet clear who will be nominated for vice president.
In front of “Horizon”, representatives of the academic circles at the university were divided in their assessment of the upcoming candidacy of Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov.
Without belittling his scientific achievements, Prof. Milen Ljubenov stated to “Horizon” that Prof. Gerdzhikov is not recognizable to the general public and predicted:
“There is no chance for him to win the elections”, and GERB commented on the move as follows:
“GERB are trying to use the institutional authority of the oldest university in Bulgaria through its rector, and not so much with the person Anastas Gerdzhikov”.
Prof. Rumiana Kolarova did not deny that she will be part of the initiative committee that will nominate Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov for the head of state and welcomed the request of GERB to support a civilian nomination:
“The president should not be a political leader. It’s wonderful when a person who seeks agreement rather than confrontation rises.”
Prof. Anastas Gerdzhikov has been the rector of Alma Mater for two consecutive terms. He is 58 years old, a professor of ancient and medieval literature. He then attended Sofia University and Humboldt University in Berlin.
In 2006, he received the scientific degree “Doctor of Philological Sciences” with the thesis “The mirror of the ruler. Origin and development of the Speculum regale genre in antiquity and the early Middle Ages”. Since 2008, he has been a professor of ancient and medieval literature with a habilitation thesis “Development of the Speculum regale genre in the 12th and 13th centuries”.
He leads lectures on the Latin language – phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, and Roman literature at the Department of Classical Philology of Sofia University.
His research interests are in the field of Roman literature and the political theory of antiquity and the Middle Ages. He is the author of four monographs and over forty studies and articles in the field. He is the author of the first translation into Bulgarian of Aristotle’s “Politics”.
In the period 2001-2003 he was the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, in 2007-2008 he was the manager of the “Scientific Research” Fund, and from 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the specialized council for literary studies at the Higher Attestation Commission.
In the period 2010-2011, he was the Deputy Rector of Sofia University for accreditation and scientific activity. From 2011 to 2014, he was the deputy rector of Sofia University for educational activities – doctoral students and continuing education.
On November 17, 2015, he was elected rector of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. On November 20, 2019, he was re-elected as rector.
