The 29th match day of our competition is already over. At the moment, our regular competition is gradually in the final straight line towards the play-offs. As usual, the Professional Refereeing Department takes a look at some questionable phases that took place during the last match day.
The highlight of the last match day took place in Limburg. Leader KRC Genk took on Union SG in-house. After about 20 minutes, Siebe Van Der Heyden (Union) received a ball on the arm, after which Genk was awarded a penalty kick. According to the Refereeing Department, Genk was lucky in this phase. The institute is of the opinion that the VAR should intervene, and that the Limburgers did not deserve a penalty kick. “The Union defender’s right arm is next to his body, and he is not making any movement towards the ball. His body also maintains a normal position,” said the PRD.
In the match between RSC Anderlecht and Cercle Brugge, the end of the match was derailed by a violent intervention by Kevin Denkey (Cercle Brugge). The attacker was shown a red card, and according to the PRD, that decision was more than justified.
No mistakes in other games
The Professional Refereeing Department also made it especially clear that the VAR and referees made no further mistakes during the last match day. For example, the awarded penalty kick for KV Mechelen was justified, and Anton Tanghe of KV Oostende also received a justified red card against Eupen. Finally, there was no reason to discuss Daniel Opare’s red card with Seraing against Antwerp.
