Professional Cyclist Michel Heßmann Tests Positive for Doping: Latest Updates and Contamination Theory

As of: November 3rd, 2023 4:37 p.m

For professional cyclist Michel Heßmann, the B sample confirmed the positive doping test. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) announced this on Friday (November 3rd, 2023).

Nothing more can be said at this point, it is still an ongoing process, said a spokeswoman. Heßmann’s lawyer Rainer Cherkeh referred to his earlier statement that there was no misuse of a diuretic. “According to the current test results and findings from other diuretic cases, everything points to contamination,” he told the German Press Agency.

Heßmann tested positive for a diuretic during a training check in Germany on June 14th. The active ingredients stimulate urine production and thus ensure the body’s drainage. After the case became known, he was suspended from his team Jumbo-Visma in August. The team spokesman did not respond to an inquiry about the new development as of Friday afternoon.

No doping substances were found during the search

In mid-August, Heßmann’s house in the Freiburg area was searched. Officials from the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office confiscated data carriers and no doping substances were found.

Heßmann made his debut at the Giro d’Italia Grand Tour this year after becoming European champion in the mixed relay in 2020. Heßmann still has a contract with Jumbo-Visma until 2024.
