Professional clubs long for clarity, but ‘no black scenarios for the time being’

These are uncertain times for professional football clubs. The competition has stopped and no one knows for how long. On Tuesday, the cabinet will come up with any new measures in response to the outbreak of the corona virus. In any case, the clubs hope for clarity about whether or not the competition will be played out.

“I am restless and I am definitely worried,” says PEC Zwolle chairman Adriaan Visser. “Especially for the coming season. It is not yet possible to estimate the impact of this crisis. We still have a nice buffer at PEC for the short term. But it can also be used up quickly.”

Wouter Gudde, general manager of FC Groningen, also does not foresee immediate financial problems for his club. “We are reasonably healthy in that area. We have sold quite a few players this season, but with the intention of reinvesting that money into the selection.”

Drying up sponsorship income is a particular concern for professional football clubs. Because many companies are struggling to survive, they may have to stop sponsoring.
