The romantic notion that we will ever get Macedonia back is an illusion. Anti-Bulgarianism and hatred have taken root in Skopje. The neighbors plead that they are Macedonian Slavs, but the truth is that out of a population of 2 million, about 800,000 are Albanians. They are furious in Skopje because Europe has taken our stand. Archaeologist Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov stated this in an interview with Maritsa.
“Just the beastly face of Macedonianism showed itself in all its glory – as I know it, but the people in our country do not know it. This shows, on the one hand, that the French proposal was the best that could be done in this terrible atmosphere. And secondly, Europe can now see what the people of North Macedonia are, about whom the Europeans had a somewhat romantic idea – how we, the big country, oppress the small one.
And at the moment the Macedonians are cursing the EU, burning the flag of the European Union, violating the Prespa and previous agreements, waving the Virgin Star with 16 rays, not with 8, which is according to their constitution.
It is no coincidence that Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that it might be time for North Macedonia and Albania to be separated on their way to the EU. Something we have been advocating for for a long time.
So our support for the proposal is correct. And let the Bulgarians put an end to this romantic idea of Macedonia, the most romantic part of Bulgarian history was called by President Petar Stoyanov. There is nothing romantic in North Macedonia. On the streets of Skopje, we saw so much hatred for Bulgaria that I was also surprised, although I also know the fangs of Macedonianism.
We should not have the romantic notion that we will bring Macedonia back. We will not return it. The point is not to steal Bulgarian history,” said Prof. Ovcharov.
