Prof. Marek Safjan resigns from the position of judge of the CJEU

Professor Marek Safjan is leaving the position of judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). January 31, 2024 will be his last day in office, the Tribunal informed.

“The General Assembly of Judges of the CJEU agreed to his resignation before the new judge took up his position. Professor Marek Safjan has been a judge of the Court of Justice since October 7, 2009.“- we read in the press release.

From 1997 he was a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal, and in 1998 he became its president. He held this position until 2006. Three years later, he became a judge of the CJEU.

Previously, in the years 1991-1998, Safjan taught law at the University of Warsaw. In the years 1994-1997 he was the vice-rector of this university.

Who chooses the judges of the CJEU?

The Court of Justice of the European Union consists of 27 judges. They are appointed by common accord between EU governments for a renewable term of six years.

The CJEU safeguards the uniform interpretation of EU law in all Member States and its compliance by EU countries and institutions.
