In our country, two people died from West Nile fever. There is also information about another Bulgarian who is a carrier of the disease. All three infected are aged between 61 and 74 years. The disease is usually spread to humans by infected mosquitoes that are infected by infected birds, the Ministry of Health says.
Assoc. Angel Kunchev, chief state health inspector, commented on the topic on the air of Nova.
“Both patients who died are relatively old and have serious illnesses, which is the main reason for their disease to be more severe. In 70-80% of cases, there are even no symptoms. About 20% have headaches, nausea and fever. Only 1% have such severe symptoms,” he explained.
“The incubation period varies widely, depending on the amount of causative agents that have entered our body. How to recognize it is very difficult, and this is the reason why the RZI sent a letter,” Kunchev explained.
According to him, the probability of someone suffering from the virus is very small.
“Just today, we discussed with the colleagues from the RZI, since two of the patients are from the capital, they are elderly, they have not traveled much, and mosquito disinsection will be done. Doctors must know, think about the disease and when it is seen that the symptoms are more severe and there are neurological symptoms or manifestations of meningitis, a thorough diagnosis should be sought. There are no vaccines against this virus,” added Kunchev.
He explained that one should not keep the windows open in the evening and wear longer clothes.
