/ world today news/ Let us remember that there is hope, urged the rector of the Sofia University, Prof. Ivan Ilchev, at the academic celebration on the occasion of the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture and Slavic Writing.
The celebration began with a minute’s silence in memory of the former Rector of the Sofia University Academician Nikola Popov.
After that, Prof. Ilchev pointed out all the achievements, winning projects in the past year. He also commented on the place that Sofia University occupies in the Bulgarian and world rankings.
“I intended to end my speech this year with an ironic thank you to our statesmen, who have boundless confidence in you, colleagues, and are convinced that with the same state funding that other state universities receive, you will continue to achieve these results; that without a penny of additional funding they will be able to boast of a national library at the European level; to congratulate them for their faith that with one lev per square meter of built-up area we will continue to maintain 17 cultural monuments, including some of the emblematic buildings of the capital; for their confidence that we will continue – with this funding and with the lowest fees in our country, to provide young Bulgarians who were not fortunate enough to be born with a golden spoon in their mouth, a good education; for their expectation that we will quietly continue to watch them violate the Higher Education Act in its research funding part and thank them that instead of the 10% stipulated in the law, we get a little more than 2%; for their expediency with which, after only ten years of persuasion and insistence, they managed to adopt a Strategy for Higher Education, which, if approved by next year’s budget, will slightly improve the situation of quality higher education in our country, but I gave up. I refused, seeing that they were so absorbed in their petty political quarrels that they did not think, according to the official announcement of the government, to invite a representative of education, science or art to the official delegation, not to meet the Pope, but to bow in front of the tomb of Saint Cyril. It seemed superfluous to me. They won’t understand it. And in order not to end on this note – let’s remember that there is hope”, said Prof. Ilchev and noted the example of the teacher from Kazanlak Teodosiy Teodosiev.
