/ world today news/ It is exciting the way in which the Bulgarian Christians saved their Jews – how they accommodated them in their homes, how the Bulgarian Orthodox Church interceded for them, how the Bulgarian soldiers refused to carry out the orders of their commanders, because of them .
This was stated during his lecture in the conference hall of the Faculty of Theology today by Prof. Dr. Edward (Ed) Gaffney, professor of law at Valparaiso University, creator of the film “Empty Wagons: Destruction and Salvation of Bulgarian Jews in World War II” , reported a BGNES reporter.
The theme of the event was “The contribution of the Bulgarian church to the salvation of the Jews”. Among the guests was the highly respected Prof. Henny Laurer, who went through the hell of the dramatic events of the Second World War and was interned during the persecution of the Jews by the regime.
Prof. Gaffney dwelt at the beginning of his lecture on the dark matter of wars.
“Each one of us should study wars because if we don’t, we risk making the same mistakes in the future,” he said. He dwelt on the drama of past bloody events in which millions of young people have died or been maimed, on the reasonable need to prevent wars, but often on the impossibility of doing so. According to him, in a world with military alliances, it is very easy to provoke conflict or war based on the impossible dialogue and opposition. He also talked about a special phenomenon – “every war has its little dirty wars”, which are usually not talked about, Prof. Gaffney pointed out.
He also talked about his work with his students, who were tasked with searching for documentary traces of painful episodes from the wars. What scares them the most is that what they see could happen to them, he admitted. But all this makes them want to talk about the past, about the lessons learned from it.
Regarding Bulgaria, Prof. Gafni shared that he had never seen such a sight – the Faculty of Theology of an Orthodox Church in close proximity to a mosque and a church, which speaks volumes for the level of national agreement between ethnic groups and religions in our country.
