prof. dr. Walter Ruda attends conferences and universities in New York and Hoboken

The visit to the “Five-Star Conference on Research in Finance” at the Stern School of Business in New York City was one of the highlights of a visit by Prof. Dr. Walter Ruda. Both the main buildings of New York University NYU and the Stern School of Business buildings are located on Washington Square in Greenwich Village. This conference is organized annually by Prof. Dr. Martin J. Gruber, Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions at the Stern School of Business. Representatives from five major universities on the Northeast Coast of the United States present their funding research results. These are classes from Princeton University, Yale University, Wharton University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University and NYU.

The highlight of the conference was the lecture by Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Oliver Hart, Harvard University. Oliver Hart was awarded the 2016 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for his work on contract theory. As keynote speaker over the lunch, he gave a lecture on the topic of shareholder rights against the backdrop of the direct exercise of voting rights. Hart argues that companies should maximize shareholder welfare (swm – shareholder welfare management) and not market value (svm – shareholder value management). Lunch classes are a popular way to combine food and academic exchange in the United States. For completeness, multiple Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift received NYU’s honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts in front of tens of thousands at a graduation ceremony that packed a packed New York Yankees stadium in the Bronx.

A visit to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey meant a reunion: The ICSB World Conference took place in 2016 on this former island in the Hudson River, just across from Manhattan. A spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline can also distract you from your studies. Frequent ferries connect Hoboken to Manhattan several times a day. Other ways to get to Manhattan are by bus or the Path Train.

Stevens Institute of Technology is the fourth oldest and one of the leading technical universities in the United States. Named after the Stevens family of inventors, Stevens Institute of Technology remains strongly associated with entrepreneurship. In addition to several Nobel laureates, Frederick Winslow Taylor (founder of “Scientific Management”) and Henry Gantt (developer of the Gantt chart) also studied here. Eugen McDermott, co-founder of Texas Instruments and Charles Stewart Mott, co-founder of General Motors are also alumni. The more than 8,000 students are offered an interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial environment under the slogan “Inspired by Humanity – Powered by Technology”.
