Prof. Dr. Mariela Geneva-Popova, PhD, is the new dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Plovdiv. She was elected with 307 of the votes of the Faculty’s General Assembly, which she will lead during the 2023-2027 term. 126 of the delegates voted for the second candidate – Prof. Dr. Maria Orbetsova, PhD. For the first time in its history, MU’s largest faculty will be headed by a woman.
“Thank you to those who voted for me, and I hope to justify the trust. Thank you to those who did not vote for me, I hope you will be my corrective and point out my mistakes,” Prof. Geneva, whose mandate program is under the motto “Continuity, inspiration, future”. She is a specialist rheumatologist with over 25 years of experience and until now was the deputy dean for quality and accreditation at the Faculty.
Prof. Geneva has over 150 publications in Bulgarian and international publications, she has conducted specializations in Germany, Latvia, Spain, Russia. She is a member of the Bulgarian Society of Rheumatology, the Bulgarian Society of Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis, the South Bulgarian Society of Infectious Diseases, the Union of Scientists, the American Society of Women in Rheumatology.
Improving the educational process by improving the quality management system, increasing the mobility of teachers and students, creating conditions for the development of research activities, practically oriented training of students, rational use of the possibilities of the Simulation Training Center and effective coordination with university hospitals . These were among the main goals laid down in Prof. Geneva’s management program.
A report on the past four-year term was made by the acting dean Prof. Dr. Jeanette Grudeva-Popova, MD. In the main unit of the Medical University-Plovdiv, 3,200 students majoring in “Medicine” are being trained. Currently, there are 1,988 foreign medical students – citizens of 50 countries from 6 continents. They are 72.7% of all students in English-taught master’s programs at the Medical University .
“I am convinced that an excellent prerequisite has been created for the Faculty to continue its development as an authoritative educational and scientific center. I thank the entire academic staff for their hard work and efforts in training quality specialists, for participating in research and project activities, as well as and to the students for their support,” said Prof. Grudeva.
The rector, Prof. Dr. Angel Uchikov, dmn, who until his election on November 2 of this year was the dean of the Faculty, wished the new management to maintain the good results and build on what has been achieved so far.
