At the Cidra dam, Lázaro and his brigade of fishermen prepare to fish every morning. In the reservoir they mainly catch tench, animals that have an average weight of 1 kg.
“We have the nets and the mouth, we go in and see the patch of fish. We block it off all around and put the mats around it and the next morning we take out the fish. We are working on the capture but that depends a lot on the sowing and fertilization,” explained Lázaro Sánchez Rodríguez, Head of the Fishing Brigade.
“This year the production plan is for 184 tons, and the Cidra dam has 90 percent of the production of that plan. To date we have 80.6 tons, which represents a decrease in relation to the previous year,” explained Pedro Alcadio Peña Quintero, Director of UEB Acuícola Limonar
Despite these figures, production is still insufficient to meet the demands of the population. The volumes are destined for medical diets in the municipalities of Unión de Reyes, Pedro Betancourt and Limonar, as well as the industry in Cárdenas.
“Today we have around a million fry planted in the dam, which will contribute to the production at the end of next year. We have also set up another strategy, which is the fertilization of the reservoir. We will begin when the rains stop and with this we will make the animals grow and also increase production,” added Peña Quintero.

The Limonar Aquaculture UEB also has two ice factories and a mini-industry where they process fish and make other alternative products such as croquette dough for sale to the population.
The Cidra reservoir is one of the main sites for catching tench and carp and has an area of 363 hectares. In addition, 7 micro-dams converge there, which serve the Matanzas Fishing Company.
