Mexico City. Although the northern zone continues to be the leader in the production of auto parts in Mexico, with Coahuila, Nuevo León, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas and Sonora at the head, there are entities that, although they are not so closely linked to this sector, are experiencing growth in said industrial activity, revealed Armando Cortés, general director of the National Auto Parts Industry (INA).
In a context of the relocation of production chains in Mexico, there are states that are experiencing significant growth in the production of auto parts. Among those that the INA director highlighted was Yucatán, with an increase of 117.69 percent in January compared to the same month of the previous year; Zacatecas followed, with an increase of 31.50 percent; Durango, with 18.79 percent; San Luis Potosí, 18.26 percent and State of Mexico, 15.40 percent. To which he clarified that this is because the auto parts industry in Mexico is diversifying, generating economic development in the country.
“They are states that are not traditionally considered in the production of auto parts and are showing significant growth between 2023 and 2024 and that shows that the auto parts industry is diversifying and is generating development in entities where the production of auto parts did not traditionally occur,” Cortes asserted.
He added that significant growth is being seen in these states; That is to say, if we put them in an absolute proportion they still represent a small percentage, but the growth they are having is considerable.
“One of the important things about the relocation of productive chains (nearshoring) is that there are opportunities in all states; Obviously we start with entities that traditionally already have manufacturing operations, but we are already beginning to have greater benefits in other states; That is to say, we are going to see, along with the increase in production at the national level, how states that traditionally did not have significant production begin to grow in their production of auto parts, gradually, but it is already a trend that is observed and will generate development for the entire region of Mexico,” said the INAI director.
In a joint press conference, INA and the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), in which they shared relevant information on the performance of the automotive sector in the first quarter of 2024, Armando Cortés specified that the production of auto parts in Mexico exceeds 10 billion dollars in January 2024, so it is expected that this production trend above 10 billion dollars will continue throughout the year.
Goals to reach
For his part, Guillermo Rosales, director of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), estimated that the domestic automotive market will continue the sale of vehicles in positive territory to have a closing of 2024 of one million 451 thousand units, almost a 7.0 percent (6.6 percent) increase compared to 2023.
“Making a qualitative assessment, I am seeing elements that could even bring us closer to one and a half million units, depending on whether consumer sentiment is maintained, purchasing power is maintained, and also the competition that we have been registering. . And, at the same time, as hybrid and electric vehicles are already being sold, they are already being sold from imported sources and those manufactured in the Ford and General Electric plants,” commented Rosales.
In another vein, regarding the regularization of illegal vehicles, an extension was given for the validity of the regularization of vehicles until the closure of the current administration, on September 30. Regularization is being given to the vehicles that continue to enter and that has led to a regularization of more than 2 million 100 thousand units.
With its respective effect of a decrease in sales of formal business vehicles in northern states.
On the other hand, Rosales commented, he hopes that the next administration will conclude this regularization.
