Samsung has equipped its A54 5G no longer with a quadruple, but with a triple photo module. The smartphone goes from a 64 megapixel sensor to another main one of 50 Mpx. It is always accompanied by a wide-angle lens with OIS (f / 1.8). To complete its photo component, the manufacturer offers a 12 Mpx sensor with an ultra wide-angle (f / 2.2), and a 5 Mpx sensor with its macro optics. The additional 5 Mpx module, integrated into the Galaxy A53 5G and dedicated to depth measurement, therefore disappears from the equation.
Module principal : 50 Mpx, f/1,8
The main module of the Galaxy A54 5G delivers 12.5MP images thanks to the pixel binning. Shots which, as illustrated in the comparison below, retain the sharpness of the Galaxy A53 (16 Mpx), but with a colorimetry that is gaining in accuracy.
Compared to its direct competitor at an equivalent price and released in the same period, the Galaxy A54 5G provides fairly bright and contrasting colors, but not too saturated. The sharpness is high, the algorithms easily detect the elements that deserve to be well drawn (the characters on the cover of the book, for example), and the edges of the image suffer from little blurring. In short, the Galaxy A54 is convincing at capturing shots in good lighting conditions.
Samsung claims to have made great progress in terms of night photos, but it is clear that it still has a long way to go. Smoothing takes over the image, but there is progress on the restitution of colors and small details.
Mode 50 Mpx
Available in the image format settings, the 50 megapixel mode often allows you to crop the shots more generously without blatant loss of detail. Less forcing the contrasts, the treatment is softer. On the other hand, in low light, the lack of processing is detrimental to the shot.
Module ultra grand-angle : 12 Mpx, f/2,2
Unlike Xiaomi’s model, which relies on a 200 Mpx main sensor and only offers another 8 Mpx to accompany its ultra-wide-angle optics, Samsung has chosen a 12 Mpx module here. This was also the case with the Galaxy A53 5G. The 2023 model benefits from a significantly improved treatment on colorimetry in particular, but also exposure.
Still in sufficient lighting conditions, the smartphone offers much higher sharpness than the Xiaomi model does, and manages to limit distortion around the edges of the image, which however lack sharpness.
In low light, the image produced by the Galaxy A54 5G is certainly more usable than that of the Xiaomi model, which suffers from far too pronounced smoothing and color desaturation. That said, a very present digital noise penalizes the shot which lacks detail.
Front module, portrait and video mode
The Galaxy A54 5G has a 32 MP front photo sensor, like its predecessor. This one takes detailed and well-exposed shots. Be careful, in portrait mode, be sure to play with the gauge dedicated to bokeh, because the level of blur defined by default lacks naturalness. By restraining it a little, the result becomes natural and pleasant. As for video rendering, up to Full HD at 60 fps or 4K at 30 fps, it is effective and benefits from correct stabilization.
