MEXICALI, JANUARY 20, 2022. – Wheat is one of the traditional crops and increased production in the Mexicali Valley, hence the importance of keeping producers and technicians updated on the new technologies implemented for grain production.
The Secretary of the Countryside and Food Security, Juan Meléndrez Espinoza, He indicated that this first conference is part of a cycle of training that is contemplated during this 2022 for the agricultural producers of our state.
“It is of the utmost importance that our producers stay updated, that they know the application of technological packages for crops, since having good harvests depends on it. The instruction of the Governor of the State, Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, is to bring the necessary tools closer, especially due to the relevance of cultivation in the Valley of Mexicali”, highlighted the state official.
The conference was given by Jorge Iván Alvarado, from the National Institute for Agricultural and Livestock Forestry Research (INIFAP), who spoke of the classification of wheat according to its use, the released varieties, variety adoption, and agronomic management of bread and crystalline wheat.
He pointed out that wheat is classified into four groups according to its use: Group I is intended for the bread industry, since it is a weak wheat; Group II is used for the artisanal bread industry; Group III is intended for the biscuit industry; and Group V, the most common in the Mexicali Valley, is used for the pasta and macaroni industry.
Until 2021, there was a registry of 151 varieties of wheat at the national level, of which only 109 are validated by INIFAP, which represents 72.2 percent of the total varieties of the grain.
Likewise, he indicated that the Mexicali valley has the capacity to produce wheat seed for export, since it is an area free of partial carbon, which is a pest that affects wheat cultivation, causing greater damage to flour-type wheat and to a lesser degree to crystalline or durum wheats.
The main varieties, optimal planting dates, use of herbicides, fertilization and irrigation management were discussed, which influence good crop yields.
It was indicated which are the main varieties that are cultivated in the Mexicali Valley, where Borlaun 100, Cachanilla F2000, Faisan S2010 stands out, in terms of bread wheat and crystalline wheat: CIRNO C2008, Martínez C2016, Barobampo C2015, among others.
