Six of the ten films shortlisted by the Producers Guild of America (PGA) are shown through video-on-demand platforms, while theaters have only just started to reopen in New York and have still been closed in Los Angeles for nearly a decade. ‘one year, due to health measures linked to the coronavirus.
At Netflix, it’s the drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 who seems to have the most chances of winning a trophy, ahead of Mank and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Amazon – which was not in the PGA contest last year – can count on Borat 2, already awarded at the Golden Globes, as well as on One Night in Miami and Sound of Metal.
Neither platform has ever won the PGA or Academy Award for Best Feature Film.
However, the PGAs are considered a relatively reliable barometer for the Oscars which will be awarded at the end of April. Made up of some 8,000 professionals who make it rain and shine in Hollywood, the producers’ association has awarded 10 of the last 13 Oscar winners for best film.
While the pandemic has forced studios to postpone the release of big productions, the intimate film Nomadland emerges as one of the main favorites of this award season. Produced by Disney affiliate Searchlight, Chloe Zhao’s film was crowned Golden Globes and is also up for the PGA.
Warner Studios are represented by Judas and the Black Messiah while Universal relies on Promising Young Woman.
The only independent producer to compete this year is A24, for Threaten which features a family of Americans of South Korean origin settling in the countryside in search of a new life.
Like the Golden Globes, the PGA jury also rewards television productions. This year the newcomers Bridgerton and Ted Lasso enter the race, facing the eternal favorite The Crown.
The PGA trophies will be presented on March 24 in a virtual ceremony.
