The sowing of soybean zafriña or out of season is something that the producer sees as an opportunity to make extra money. The agronomist Msc Ernesto Zelarayán, from the Great Seeds firm, considers the same thing, but tells us “if you don’t do it right, it won’t work out”, and explains why.

According to how soybean crops are developing in the South of the country, unlike the Center and North, everything indicates that there will be lots that will bet on double cultivation (zafriña soybeans), either because the early planting of September was accelerated with the dry season, or because there were producers who bet on short-cycle varieties and will be harvesting from late December to early / mid-January, the engineer began by saying.
Regarding the varieties that Great Seeds has, the professional explained. What our varieties have that we recommend for starting soybean planting, that is, in September, is that they are very prepared to be sown in January / February, since they are quite insensitive to photoperiod, they present good start, and if the rain accompanies they will be obtained yields similar to normal harvests.
Yield and varieties
We can calmly confirm that if the producer bets on our varieties, he will be able to obtain at least 2,000 kilos per hectare, with plants that grow from 16 to 17 knots with a height very similar to that of the normal harvest. The varieties we recommend are the GS 5R 50 Rpp and the GS 6R 60 Rpp for their excellent behavior. We do not recommend the other varieties in our package because our intention is not only to sell, but for the producer to win, said the professional.
Soil type
The varieties mentioned are ready for medium fertility soils, but we must consider that we will be sowing to the end in December and all of January, the time of the year when the supply of solar radiation begins to decrease, a situation that normally reduces the growth potential of the plant. plant. We must give the crop everything in our power so that the plants compensate for the lower supply of radiation.
Thinking error
Regarding fertilization for the zafriña, the researcher explained. There are people who think that because it gave good fertilization to the period crop, there will be a remnant in the soil for zafriña soybeans, this is categorically not the case; When you harvest, there is no remaining fertilizer, what is more, what was placed in the harvest season is not enough to compensate for what this crop took away. So, the least you have to give the plant (zafriña) to pretend something is a good fertilization; You have to do things right, not fertilize 50 percent as many do, the zafriña does not have to be mismanaged, it must be fertilized in the same way as the normal harvest.
Beware of rust
Unfortunately, very unfavorable climatic conditions occur in soybean zafriña that predispose the plant to diseases, mainly Asian rust. Using Great Seeds varieties with Rpp technology, the first fungicide application is recommended to be carried out when the plants have 4-5 nodes together with glyphosate, always using a quality product; This application is to control the entry of diseases that will only manifest at the end of the cycle. After 15 to 20 days it is recommended to make a second and final application of fungicide in order for the Rpp technology to continue to be effective over time, said the specialist.
Message
In the end, you are the architect of your own destiny; If you did not do well, it will not turn out well. It was really quite an abnormal year, with many unfavorable conditions and our varieties have been surprising. We have examples of materials that tolerated 30 days of dryness, in a very interesting way, concluded the agronomist Ernesto Zelarayán.
