Agent 007 fans are going to have to find patience wherever they can. His return to the big screen with a new face after the retirement of Daniel Craig is not even in its infancy. This has been confirmed by Barbara Broccoli, producer of the James Bond films and custodian of the character along with Michael G. Wilson.
Broccoli commented on The Guardian that planning for the next stage of the spy, which will involve a complete update of the saga, has not yet begun:
“I go back to ‘Goldeneye’, when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the Wall has fallen, Bond is dead, we don’t need Bond, the whole world is at peace and there are no more villains’, how they were wrong “Daniel gave us the ability to delve into the emotional life of the character… and the world was ready for it. I think these films reflect their time, and there is a very long road ahead to reinvent it for the new chapter, and not we haven’t even started are that.
James Bond said goodbye to fans in 2021 with ‘Daniel Craig’s last mission. From there the rumors began about who would inherit the tuxedo, the license to kill and the taste for the Martini mixed, not shaken. The one who had been most talked about so far was Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who would have had meetings with the producers.
At the time it was also said that the objective was to rejuvenate the character by choosing a less tall actor (Craig was 38 when they announced him as 007), but the casting director stated for a long time that they were not finding in the younger actors what they needed.
Barbara Broccoli emphasizes that the new stage will continue to focus on films that can be seen in theaters, despite Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. He also rules out spin-offs or series for the moment: “Our priority is to make the films. When we start a Bond film it occupies all of our attention for three or four years, so that is our priority. We make the Bond films for the big screen and everything about the Bond movies is for the public to see in that format around the world, that’s why we didn’t want to do television.”
James Bond on Amazon
Although James Bond is not going to make the leap to the small screen, at least for now, the franchise does branch out for the first time in a contest, ‘007’s Road to a Million’, which will be presented by Brian Cox and in which several “Amateur agents” will compete in an adventure around the world with tests full of nods to the saga and a final cash prize of one million pounds.
Regarding this spin-off, Barbara Broccoli considers it “something fun to do in between” until they get to the James Bond update. She emphasizes that the contest will be driven by the same values as the films: “heroism, courage and strength.” It will premiere on Prime Video on November 10, and they do not rule out that it may have other international variants.
The movie saga (except the last one) has been available again on the Amazon streaming platform since last October 1, but if you want to do a marathon it shouldn’t take long because they will leave Prime Video again on January 31 of the year coming.
