Prodia launches a new test to detect cancer-causing gene mutations

Jakarta (ANTARA) – PT Prodia Widyahusada launched the BRCA 1/2 inspection germline to detect mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes that can cause cancer, including breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

For information, BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes are tumor suppressors. When functioning normally, they help prevent the uncontrolled growth of cells that can lead to malignant tumors. However, when the mutation is damaged, it can lead to the development of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The danger is that these mutations can be passed from one generation to the next.

1/2 . BRCA check germline done using next generation sequencing, namely technology that uses tools sequencer to be able to identify genetic variations faster and more accurately because in one experiment you can directly examine all genes.

“If the examination is carried out on a patient who has been diagnosed with cancer, then the cancer tissue has been removed and has not had time to do a BRCA 1/2” examination germline before, you can still carry out this inspection,” said Prodia Product Manager Trilis Yulianti in a press release, Friday.

“This examination can be used to determine the use of the drug class that is most suitable for the patient,” he continued.

Trilis added that one of the new drug classes used in cancer treatment is PARP inhibitors. This class of drugs blocks the repair of DNA damage to stop the growth of cancer cells that have variants in the harmful BRCA 1 or BRCA2 genes.

In addition, the examination is also used to determine the type of therapy and assess the development of cancer in the future.

Examination is also useful for patients who are still healthy with a history of breast and ovarian cancer in the family. The goal is to find out whether he has mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes so that preventive measures can be taken.

BRCA 1/2 inspection service germline which uses blood samples are available at the Prodia Genome Center located in Prodia Kramat, Jakarta. The time required from the DNA extraction process until the results are analyzed in the form of a report is 10 days.

Later, a person who performs this examination will undergo a risk assessment, meet with a genetic counselor to review various possibilities or factors, such as the presence of relatives who have had cancer, the cancer they have had, and at what age they were diagnosed and fill out a questionnaire.

1/2 . BRCA check germline also does not require fasting, so it can be done at any time, while sampling can be served in all Prodia branches.
