The catholic Dean Schmid said there were probably some women among the expected up to 2,000 participants. In November 2020, the responsible parish council cleared the way for women on horses. Last year, Corona and a lack of changes to the statutes of the rider groups prevented their participation.
According to the city of Weingarten, the “blood step” is the largest equestrian procession in Europe.

According to the organizers, the procession in Baden-Württemberg to accompany the Holy Blood relic with tens of thousands of spectators has been going on for more than 900 years. According to legend, the relic contains earth-mixed blood from Christ’s crucifixion.
