The fire brigade had to turn out hundreds of times to rescue people from their flooded houses or cars. No one was injured. Streets on the island of Corfu turned into rivers and shops and cellars filled with water there too.
No end to rainfall for the time being
The severe weather is caused by a small low-pressure area slowly moving over Greece, explains weatherman Marco Verhoef. The Mediterranean Sea is at its warmest in the autumn, which means that a relatively large amount of moisture is released into the air above it. “If the air at any height is also cold, then these kinds of heavy showers easily arise.”
For now, the end is not in sight. The low pressure area is moving so slowly that heavy rain is expected at least into Saturday. Locally, the total precipitation can rise to more than 200 millimeters. “That is almost a quarter of what normally falls in a year in the Netherlands,” says Verhoef.
