Problems could be solved even without abolition


Despite the Council of States’ narrow yes this week to the abolition of imputed rental values, the reformers still have high hurdles to overcome. Those are the four biggest annoyances of the current system.

Whether the latest attempt to change the system of home ownership taxation will be successful remains to be seen.

For those affected, the victory was partly a felt defeat. The Council of States had narrowly voted for the abolition of the imputed rental value on Tuesday. But even proponents admitted that the template could be improved and that there were still high hurdles waiting. A referendum vote would be rather difficult in the face of opposition from most of the cantons and the left, and with, at best, only mild support from the Federal Council. This calls for the question of whether the often mentioned problems of the status quo could also be solved without abolishing the imputed rental value. Proponents of reform usually point to four annoyances. The points in order:
