Stories of customers who bought new MacBooks with an M1 chip and their screens cracked spontaneously appear on the Internet. These are both MacBooks Air and MacBook Pro.
Although in some cases Apple repaired damaged machines for free, most users paid considerable sums for the service. Users complain that cracks often occur when simply opening or closing the monitor cover. Sometimes it was enough to adjust the angle of the monitor and cracks appeared on the display.
In one case, the damage was seen in a 6-month-old MacBook Air M1, which lay intact all night, and in the morning after opening it had two cracks on the display. Apple commented on the problem by not accepting the complaint because it is a contact damage caused by a small object left between the lid and the keyboard when closed. According to the user, however, there was no subject in those places.
On another MacBook, a similar problem occurred when simply adjusting the screen angle. The display snapped and Apple priced the service at 725 AUD, which is less than CZK 12,000. Another customer then paid GBP 570 for the same problem, ie about CZK 17,000.
The reason for these problems is not yet known. It is possible that the cracks really come from some small particles of dust or dirt that remain wedged between the monitor and the keyboard when closed. Another hypothesis is that the display bezel isn’t strong enough, and when you close or move your MacBook, the monitor twists, causing it to crack. Unfortunately, Apple has not yet commented on this issue.
