Pfizer is ready with the third dose of his vaccine anti-Covid to counter the Delta variant. Mikael Dolsten, scientific director of the US company, explained that the company intends to officially request by August the regulatory authorities, including the FDA in the USA and the EMA in the EU, for an emergency go-ahead for the production of a third dose in order to stem the increase in infections.

Dolsten pointed out, however, that data from Israel and Britain suggest that even with declining antibody levels, the vaccine remains about 95% effective against serious diseases. The serum, developed with German partner BioNTech SE, has been shown to be 95% effective in preventing the virus, but studies have also revealed that a third booster dose could generate antibody levels from 5 to 10 times higher than the second dose, thus offering more solid protection. Dolsten said several countries have already reached out to Pfizer to discuss booster doses, and that some may start administering them ahead of potential U.S. authorization.
