The pro-Western party Progressive Slovakia leads with 23.5 percent according to an election day poll published after all polling stations had closed on Saturday evening.
The biggest challenger, the pro-Russian party Smer-SD, led by former prime minister Robert Fico, is the second largest party with 21.0 percent of the vote, according to the election day poll of tvnovinsky.sk.
Neither party is close to getting a majority on its own.
The liberal centrist party Progressive Slovakia is led by Michal Simecka, who during the election campaign promised to keep a steady course in foreign policy, i.e. to continue the strong support for neighboring Ukraine, including giving the Ukrainians more weapons and ammunition. He also promised to follow the liberal line on political issues of the environment and LGBTQ+ rights.
Robert Fico and his populist Smer-SD, for their part, have advocated a more Moscow-friendly policy. Fico has denied that he is pro-Putin and has said that he will continue to support Ukraine if his party wins, but that he will stop the supply of weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainians.
The party that will govern must be prepared to enter into a coalition with several smaller parties.
