Pro-Palestinian students in the US and Europe are not backing down – 2024-05-08 14:30:08

Pro-Palestinian protest against students

Police have begun clearing a pro-Palestinian tent camp at George Washington University in the US capital. For several weeks now, tensions have continued to rise on college campuses across the United States. And this is happening more and more often in Europe as well.

Media in Washington reported that some of the pro-Palestinian protesters were pepper-sprayed when police stopped them from entering the encampment at George Washington University. About 30 people were arrested. Before that, dozens of protesters marched from there to the home of university president Ellen Granberg.

The school’s administration warned in a statement that it may expel students involved in the campus protests.

A pro-Palestinian tent camp was also set up yesterday at the University of Chicago. The administration initially allowed it to be erected there, but said the protest had begun to raise security concerns.

Since April 18, just over 2,600 people have been arrested on 50 US campuses, according to an Associated Press count. The tension spilled over into Europe. Pro-Palestinian protesters have returned to Amsterdam University, a day after police clashed with them and broke up their previous camp. Over 140 people were arrested.

There are also protests and blockades of universities in Finland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, France and Great Britain. In Berlin, police broke up a demonstration of a hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators from the Free University. In Vienna, around 50 students called on the university in the Austrian capital to end student exchanges with Israel.
