NNA – Police arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters at Yale University in Connecticut and New York University in Manhattan, as the war in Gaza continues to reverberate on university campuses America, according to Reuters.

The arrests came hours after Columbia University suspended student attendance to calm tensions on its New York campus, after the university’s administration allowed police to encamp students on foot to protest Israel’s measures in Gaza.

Video clips posted on social networking sites showed protesters stopping traffic on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, demanding that the university withdraw its investments from weapons manufacturers.

“Police arrested more than 45 protesters,” said the student-run Yale Daily News, which Yale University officials did not respond to requests for comment.

In New York, officials moved to disperse the NYU crowd shortly after dark, as hundreds of demonstrators defied hours of warnings from the university that there would be consequences if they did not vacate the square where they had gathered . A video posted on social media showed police removing tents at the protesters’ camp.

The demonstrators were fighting the officers and chanting, “We will not stop, we will not settle. Withdraw investments.”

An NYPD spokesperson said: “The arrests were made after the university asked police to enforce trespassing tickets,” but the total number of arrests will not be known until later. .There were no reports of injuries.

The protests began at the campuses of Yale, Columbia, New York and other universities across the United States in response to the latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which began on October 7 with an attack by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the then Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip, which is run by the movement.

Human rights defenders pointed to “a general increase in prejudice and hatred towards Jews, Arabs and Muslims since 7 October. Anxiety has increased recently with the start of the Passover holiday on Monday.”
