Dozens of demonstrators chained themselves together on several bridges linking Brooklyn to Manhattan to protest the war between Israel and Hamas.

Dozens of pro-Palestinian New York demonstrators briefly blocked emblematic bridges and a tunnel in the American megalopolis on Monday January 8 to protest against the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Since the start of the devastating Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip, following the bloody attack launched on October 7 by Hamas, New York has lived to the rhythm of actions in support of the Palestinians or Israel.

The multicultural city of 8.5 million people is home to nearly two million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Arabs and Muslims. These demonstrations, however, go beyond community divisions and we must add millions of inhabitants of all faiths in the New York suburbs of the state of New Jersey (to the south and west), of the Long Island peninsula (to the east) and the upscale Westchester County (to the north).

In a spectacular action under a resplendent blue winter sky, demonstrators tied and chained themselves to each other and to tires and chairs on the famous Brooklyn Bridge which connects the eponymous borough to the island of Manhattan, noted AFP journalists.

«Palestine libre !»

«This is important because there must be a ceasefire (in Gaza). It’s important to disrupt daily life to show that the siege of Gaza must end“, launched Olivia Levine, a 31-year-old actress and writer. Under the slogans “Palestine libre !“, she assured that “it was just the beginning» demonstrations, while New York and its suburbs have been shaken for three months and almost every day by pro-Palestinian actions and in support of Israel, most often peaceful.

Dozens of police officers intervened to unblock and arrest the protesters who had clung to the infrastructure of the Brooklyn Bridge while other coordinated movements took place on the twin bridges of Williamsburg and Manhattan linking Brooklyn to Manhattan above the East River.

Dozens of demonstrators were also arrested for blocking traffic at the entrance to the large Holland tunnel which connects New York to New Jersey, under the Hudson River. The New York Police (NYPD) assured that calm and traffic had returned to normal by late morning but did not say how many people had been arrested.
